Imagine having hundreds of millions of fans across social media. You can reach almost any audience, promote a brand, and command attention with a single post. So, why would you need LinkedIn?

Ask Virat Kohli.

On October 13, 2026, one of cricket’s biggest global icons made his LinkedIn debut. And no, his first move wasn’t to upload a résumé, switch on the “Open to Work” badge, or ask recruiters to contact him. His opening message was about something far bigger: building businesses and creating a lasting legacy beyond cricket. Source: Business Today

So, what is really happening here?

Is LinkedIn becoming the new playground for celebrities? Is it about money? Access to influential people? Or is there a much smarter strategy at work?

Let’s decode it.

1. Instagram shows you the star. LinkedIn introduces you to the entrepreneur.

On Instagram, Virat Kohli is the sporting superstar, the lifestyle icon and the face of major brands.

On LinkedIn, he can tell a different story.

He can talk about investments, business decisions, brand building, entrepreneurship and his vision for Indian sports. His LinkedIn debut highlighted his involvement with Agilitas Sports and his co-founder role at one8world. Source: The Economic Times

Notice the difference?

On one platform, people may ask, “What is Virat wearing?”

On another, the conversation could become, “What is Virat building—and how could we work with him?”

Same person. Different audience. Different business conversation.

And that difference could be the whole point.

2. Is he looking for a job? Probably not. He may be looking for opportunity.

Let’s be honest. A celebrity of Kohli’s stature doesn’t need LinkedIn to find a conventional job.

But business opportunities don't always arrive through job portals. They can come through founders, investors, CEOs, entrepreneurs, industry leaders and potential collaborators.

LinkedIn puts all these professional identities into one network.

For a celebrity building businesses, the platform could help communicate a more complete professional identity—one that goes beyond endorsements and sporting achievements.

It can create opportunities for conversations around partnerships, investments, distribution, brand strategy and business expansion.

Does that mean every one of these opportunities motivated Kohli to join? We cannot know that without hearing it from him.

But his first post gives us a strong clue about the direction in which he wants the conversation to move: from being a famous personality to building something that can outlast his playing career.

3. Is he here to make more money?

Possibly—but not necessarily through LinkedIn itself.

The bigger commercial opportunity may lie outside the platform.

Think about the difference between being paid to promote someone else’s product and owning a stake in a business you help build.

An endorsement can generate revenue from a campaign. A business can potentially create long-term value through products, distribution, customer loyalty and ownership.

Kohli’s focus on Agilitas and one8world puts entrepreneurship and brand building at the centre of his public professional narrative.

LinkedIn can serve as a place to communicate that narrative to people who understand business—not just celebrity culture.

In other words, the platform may not be the product. It may be a channel through which the right people discover the product, the founder and the vision.

That is a very different proposition from simply chasing likes.

4. Does LinkedIn give celebrities access to the “educated segment”?

Let’s reframe that question.

LinkedIn is not exclusively for educated people, nor are Instagram and other platforms devoid of professionals. But LinkedIn is designed around professional identities, work, expertise, organisations and business relationships.

That makes its audience context different.

A celebrity discussing a new venture on Instagram may attract fans interested in the person. The same announcement on LinkedIn can invite a different kind of response: an industry perspective, a potential partnership, a conversation with an investor or a connection with someone who can help scale the business.

The real prize may not be reaching more people. It may be reaching people who can help make something happen.

And that is a lesson for companies, founders and marketers, too.

Your biggest audience is not always your most valuable audience.

5. Why are celebrities and athletes joining LinkedIn?

The broader shift is worth watching.

Celebrities are increasingly more than entertainers or endorsers. Some are founders, investors, brand owners and business partners. Their professional identities now extend into companies, products, equity and long-term ventures.

LinkedIn gives them a space to present that side of their work.

And the opportunity is not limited to celebrities.

A founder who has spent years building a company may be known locally but remain invisible to national decision-makers. A manufacturing company may have exceptional capabilities but struggle to communicate its value to prospective partners. A professional may have deep expertise but rarely share it publicly.

In each case, LinkedIn can help turn experience into visibility—and visibility into meaningful professional conversations.

Of course, a profile alone does not create credibility. What matters is what you contribute after joining.

6. The bigger lesson for brands: Don't just build visibility. Build meaning.

At ZAKMEDIOS, we work with the idea that communication is not simply about putting content in front of people. It is about making the right message clear to the right audience.

Kohli’s LinkedIn debut offers a useful reminder: the same person or organisation can tell different stories depending on the platform and the audience.

For a company, that might mean using video to explain its expertise, introduce its leadership, communicate its growth, demonstrate its capabilities or share an informed perspective on its industry.

The objective is not to post everywhere just because everyone else is doing it.

The objective is to understand what each platform can do for your business—and create content that serves that purpose.

A good corporate video, a thoughtful leadership post or a clear explanation of your company’s work can do more than announce that your business exists. It can help people understand why your business matters.

And that is where professional communication becomes a business asset.

So, why did Virat Kohli join LinkedIn?

We cannot claim to know every reason behind his decision.

But his debut post points towards a clear theme: he wants to talk about building businesses and contributing to the future of Indian sports, not only about his cricketing career.

Maybe the more interesting question isn't why Virat Kohli joined LinkedIn.

It is this:

If one of the world's most recognisable athletes sees value in communicating his business ambitions on a professional network, are companies making the most of the professional platforms already available to them?

Are they showing the world what they sell—or explaining what they stand for, what they know and what they are building?

Because in today's attention economy, being visible is useful.

Being understood is far more powerful.

Your turn: Do you think LinkedIn is becoming a platform for celebrity business building—or will it remain primarily a professional networking site?

Share your perspective in the comments.
